Richmond Area SWE
President’s
Message by
Jill Conley It is unbelievable,
but the 2004 fiscal year of SWE is quickly drawing to a close. The
Richmond chapter maintained its membership level at 15 people this
year. This is very good retention for our chapter. However, our
retention has not matched our participation level.
We started off the
fiscal year with a bang! Girls In Science was a fantastic event
this year with over 180 middle school girls and their chaperones.
We had a great time and great participation. Richmond SWE also had
a great turnout for our Pottery Painting event in November.
However, over the last couple of months, Richmond SWE has been
struggling. In December, the section officers decided to stop
having bi-monthly business meetings and instead have a social event
every month. The officers thought this might be more interesting
for the members. We have been meeting at Capital Alehouse on Main
Street. Please continue to check the section website
(www.swe-richmond.org)
for meeting dates and times.
The Engineers Week
Career Day at the Science Museum of Virginia was a great event. We
had three Richmond SWE members participate in the event (thanks
Lynne and Nicole!), and 3 VCU Students also helped throughout the
event. The students (and parents) who stopped by the table enjoyed
the opportunity to make slime (although we had to remind several of
them not to eat it). We also talked with a couple of women who are
interested in joining in on some of our SWE activities. One new item that I
have been working on is a SWE presentation for recruiting new
members. I would like to visit several businesses in the Richmond
area to present the information on SWE and solicit new
participation. If you would like your company to hear the
information or would like to help me present the information to your
company or any other company, please contact me at
President@swe-richmond.org.
I think that probably
wraps up the last few months for Richmond SWE. Our chapter is
struggling but still going with some really great activities. We
are in the planning stages for our Girls In Science 2004 event. If
you would like to participate in the organization of Girls In
Science, please contact me at President@swe-richmond.org.
The event is always so well received by the community and is
recognized by the National SWE organization as a vital event to
promote science and engineering to middle-school girls. The Girls
In Science event is only as good as we make it, so I encourage
everyone to participate on some level.
Thanks! Jill Conley

of the scholarship committee, please contact Nicole Blakenbeckler.
Our scholarship letter was sent out in late February so that the
high senior girls can return their applications to us by May, 2004.

National Election Update The
first week of April, each voting member of SWE is being sent via US
mail voting information for the open positions on the FY05 Board of
Directors and Board of Trustees (COR Speaker and Deputy Speaker
election is handled separately). Some regions are also including
their election of Region Governor with this election. For the first
time, SWE is using Internet-based technology to deliver the
candidate information and to cast the votes. Use of this technology
over the traditional punch card ballots will result in significantly
lower costs to SWE for each ballot cast. More importantly, this
system will make it easier for members with Internet access to
review the candidates and accurately complete and submit your
ballot. I hope that this process will result in increased
participation in the election and a reduction in the number of
invalid ballots. The mailing includes the information for a voting
member to access the election system and how to obtain a paper
ballot if she/he is unable to vote electronically.
